fashion friday: vampy lips

makeup trend

this week brought the annual met ball and the celebs were out in full force showcasing their bold looks.

i noticed a fashion trend happening in makeup: the vampy lip! an odd choice for spring one might think, but it could be a sophisticated look when paired with clean, luminous skin, a dash of bronzer, and lots of lashes. avoid heavy eyeshadow and overdoing the contouring with these dark lips to keep from looking dated or too goth. what do you think – would you ever wear these dramatic lips?

p.s: these eye brightening tricks i posted this week would look great with these dark and moody lips!

mother’s day gift guide

mother's day gift ideas

mother’s day is all about spoiling your favourite person – mom! don’t buy her something useful, it’s all about getting her that luxurious item mom wouldn’t spoil herself with – a case of her fave wine, a nespresso machine (total splurge!), a magazine subscription or cozy cashmere blanket. it’s not complete without a mushy card that shows how much you appreciate her – that’s always my mom’s favourite part of any gift and i know it’s a winner if it makes her cry. take your mom out for a day of her favourite things: a stop at a coffee shop for a magazine catch up, a matinee movie (with popcorn, of course!) and a nice lunch or dinner at a spot she favours? ideal day spending quality time i’d say!

i’m lucky to have my mom here for mothers’ day and will be hosting a fancy brunch for the special day at my place for both our families. any menu ideas are welcome!

adore this: the holy grail beauty tool

clarisonic

finding a holy grail product is a rare feat; one must kiss more than a few frogs and spend more than a few dollars to finally find that pot of gold but once we do, the benefits far outweigh the hassle. allow me to introduce you to the miraculous clarisonic. i’ve had mine for almost two years and it’s an item i cannot live without: believe the hype! at about $200, this bad boy isn’t cheap but it’s your SKIN and if it works, sign me up.

how it works: micro-massaging with an oscillating brush, it raises the circulation, cleaning and ‘polishing’ skin; in doing so it delivers a toned flush and diminishes pores in the way that a good facialist does every time you use it. the sonic waves power wash your pores improving tone, texture and the overall health of your skin and it prepares skin for serums and creams with a greater rate of absorption.

how to use it: squeeze cleanser directly onto the brush and glide it over your face and neck in slow, circular motions without applying much pressure. i buy my replacement heads on ebay which helps keep costs down since you’ll need to replace the head every few months. using it once a day is plenty and you’ll see results in two weeks. one charge lasts up to two weeks so it’s very travel friendly.

if you’re looking for a more affordable option, the mia model is a smaller version of the same awesome tool.

fashion friday: spring makeup trends

neons and nudes

bobbi brown recently rolled out their spring makeup line which is a delightful mix of neons and nudes. grabbing a fresh lipgloss or eyeshadow to add to your makeup collection is a great way to freshen up your look – it’s is a makeup trend that will bring you into spring and summer with pizazz.

neon makeup trend

neon delight: while these neon’s would look a bit loud together, separately, they add a pop!

the nudes

going nude: the nude eyeshadow palette is a definite must have for a makeup kit. the bronzes, browns and taupes will work well on almost all of us and you may find yourself reaching for it daily!

review: nars tinted moisturizer

nars tinted moisturizer

as i’ve said before, i love sharing new products with my readers and operate with a “if you have nothing nice to say” policy… in other words, if i don’t love it, you won’t hear about it… because who wants another lukewarm product on their shelf?

as a huge NARS fan, i expected the best from their new tinted moisturizer and was more than proved right. i was so darn impressed with the stuff. is it pricey? yes, but it’s your skin and that’s important. go ahead skimp on items like mascara but we ALL want our skin to look and feel the best it can. my day to day foundation is NARS sheer glow, and i can say that this one actually trumps it.

the deets:

  • my skin type is oily/combo and it kept me looking fresh all day long
  • the coverage is very light, but add an extra layer a deeper finish
  • i couldn’t believe how luminous it made my skin look, it gives a majorly radiant finish
  • doesn’t settle into lines or pores like many other foundations
  • perfect for spring and summer
  • spf 30 – higher than other tinted moisturizers – allows you to skip a step in your routine

it’s a serious gem that has my full endorsement!

how to: a guide to blush

starting out our ‘makeup week’ here on {the sparkle} – a fresh makeup tutorial!

i’m SUCH a fan of blush and feel a face isn’t finished without it. this cosmetic must have adds life and youth to a face, but formulation and placement is key. especially for spring, it’s really livens things up! check out the tutorial and i’ll show you how to get the most out of your look!

on the cheap: holy crap cereal

holy crap‘ is a cereal mixture of buckwheat, chia seed, hulled hemp hearts and dried fruit. the high fiber and omega oils do wonderful things for your body, and i eat this stuff almost daily on my oatmeal. here’s the thing: this healthy eating stuff gets expensive. one bag costs about $10 and lasts just over a week. with this in mind, i decided to start making my own. it’s easy to just buy the uncomplicated ingredients from the bulk section at your grocery or health food store, throw it in a sealed bag or jar and save your money for a bottle of good wine (balance!).
