it's monday

happy monday! i’ve been getting into spring… spending more time outside and enjoying the beautiful surroundings we’re so lucky to live in. my mom has been here and is staying with us for two weeks so we’ve been doing things we normally take for granted like a visit to stanley park and enjoying some great eats. have a fantastic week! x

adore this: the holy grail beauty tool

finding a holy grail product is a rare feat; one must kiss more than a few frogs and spend more than a few dollars to finally find that pot of gold but once we do, the benefits far outweigh the hassle. allow me to introduce you to the miraculous clarisonic. i’ve had mine for almost two years and it’s an item i cannot live without: believe the hype! at about $200, this bad boy isn’t cheap but it’s your SKIN and if it works, sign me up.

how it works: micro-massaging with an oscillating brush, it raises the circulation, cleaning and ‘polishing’ skin; in doing so it delivers a toned flush and diminishes pores in the way that a good facialist does every time you use it. the sonic waves power wash your pores improving tone, texture and the overall health of your skin and it prepares skin for serums and creams with a greater rate of absorption.

how to use it: squeeze cleanser directly onto the brush and glide it over your face and neck in slow, circular motions without applying much pressure. i buy my replacement heads on ebay which helps keep costs down since you’ll need to replace the head every few months. using it once a day is plenty and you’ll see results in two weeks. one charge lasts up to two weeks so it’s very travel friendly.

if you’re looking for a more affordable option, the mia model is a smaller version of the same awesome tool.

how to: scented butter

scented butter

often times, a fancy touch can be a lot more simple than you’d think. such is the case with this little recipe for scented butter; add your favourite flavours to butter (in my case it was lemon zest and parsley), a pinch of sea salt, mix it up and store it in your fridge for up to a month.

its a nice little treat on bread, in sauces, over pasta or steak. i took it a step further and wrapped it up in plastic, parchment and a bow, gifting it to friends as they left my place after a visit. it’s always nice to make someone’s day with a sparkle!

weekend sparkles

i came across this gorgeous photo and it summed up my feelings… hurry up summer so i can eat delicious, fresh berries! we booked a little summer getaway for august long weekend and i am so excited for it. i firmly believe you always need to have something to look forward to – preferably a trip! this weekend i’m trying desperately to get a start at finishing my office; shelves and art have yet to go up. have a fantastic weekend… let’s wait for summer together!

gold friendship earrings – i love this idea!

speaking of gold – this tutorial for gold edged frames is brilliant. wonder if you could just tape off the corners and paint directly onto the frame?

fashion friday: what to wear to a wedding

spring wedding what to wear

it’s wedding season! this little ‘what to wear’ spring wedding feature includes a great floral print, and a neon belt to wrap around the mint or cream dress (YES, you can wear white to a wedding!).

i am a firm believer that you shouldn’t need to purchase a new outfit for a wedding… unless you’re the bride of course! build the look around an item most of us have in our closet: a summer dress. pair it with some neutral accessories and of course don’t forget a little wrap for the evening chill (this one comes in a few different colours); even more importantly, don’t forget to stash a pair of flats in the car for late night dancing! … seriously, nothing kills the night faster than sore feet.

recipe: oatmeal chocolate coconut clusters

oatmeal chocolate coconut clusters

these cluster style cookies are perfect for those of us who still love a treat, but are trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle. these are hearty and healthier than the average because i’ve used whole wheat flour, olive oil, unsweetened coconut, a smaller amount of brown sugar and dark chocolate. they are heavy on texture so you feel satisfied without over indulging and while they aren’t super sweet, the chunks of dark chocolate keep your sweet tooth in check. i adapted the recipe from martha stewart, and i double the recipe below to throw half in the freezer for later. also, if you have gluten allergies, like nuts in your cookies, prefer it a little sweeter, tweak as you like! this is a dairy free recipe minus the chocolate.

{the sparkle} oatmeal chocolate coconut cluster recipe:

  • 1 cup whole-wheat flour (spooned and leveled)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • pinch of sea salt
  • 1/3 cup
  • 1/3 cup (or 2/3 cup) packed dark-brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (not quick-cooking)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate (chunked or chips)

  1. preheat oven to 350 degrees. in a medium bowl, whisk together all dry ingredients; set aside.
    dry ingredients
  2. in a large bowl, whisk together oil, sugar, egg, and vanilla. add dry ingredients , and stir to combine; mix in chocolate. mixture may seem a little dry, but that’s normal.chocolate chunks
  3. using two tablespoons of dough per cookie, roll into balls; place on two baking sheets lined with parchment paper, 1 1/2 inches apart. Bake until lightly browned, 15 to 17 minutes, rotating sheets halfway through.cookies on sheet
  4. cool 5 minutes on sheets, then transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely. freeze while warm.

the switch: jean edition

the switch

while these pairs of jeans may look slightly different – you can chalk that up to styling. amazing what a pair of heels can do! instead of dropping almost $200 on a pair of jeans, switch them out for the budget version and save up for a lux bag instead…
