how to: concealer

how to concealer

like many of you, i’m always looking for the perfect concealer formula to hide dark circles. my professional kit is stocked full of items that didn’t work so well. how many times does it happen: you’ve tried it in the store but after you bring it home, you find out that the product you over-spent on… under-delivers.

save your money and give my concealing system and product suggestions a go… basically, i’ve spent the money so you don’t have to!

colour correction: this is the first thing to consider. always look for an undereye concealer with a peach undertone, as this will counter act the purple undertone on which most dark circles are based. some of my faves: benefit, laura mercier, bobbi brown and the balm.

  • start with clean hands. using your fingers allows greater control and less product waste (brushes and sponges suck up a lot of that precious product!). this also warms up and emulsifies the concealer.
  • using your ring finger, dab (do not rub) the concealer from the inner corner, downwards, in the hollow of the eye (where most dark circles are concentrated). pressing the product into the skin as opposed to smearing it on will help it stick to where it needs to.
  • continue dabbing the concealer over the rest of the under-eye. you may even need another coat which is best applied at the end of your makeup routine followed by…

the trick: a light reflecting product is your secret weapon. yves st. laurent makes the uber popular touche eclat which i recommend.

  • the trick is to ONLY use this in the darkest areas/hollows since this is where you want the light to reflect… not all over the under-eye. clarins makes one similar one. BONUS: they also diffuse the appearance of fine lines!

set: to keep the concealer from creasing as much as possible (all concealer will crease throughout the day), set it with a little translucent powder. skip this step if you’ve used a light reflecting product as described above since the dull powder will cancel out any of those reflecting properties.
